Bis(sulfophenyl) phosphonate-formaldehyde resin was prepared by the reaction of diphenyl phosphonate-formaldehyde resin with fuming sulfuric acid. This resin was used as an acid catalyst for esterification of benzoic acid with saturated primary alcohols as well as saturated secondary alcohols. The yields of the esters formed with saturated primary alcohols(C1--C9) were 62--73% at 100 °C, and with secondary alcohols(C3--C9) were 11--47% (100 °C).
