The 5th CSJ-RSC Symposium

The Chemical Society of Japan and Royal Society of Chemistry co-hosted the 5th CSJ-RSC Symposium in Dublin, Ireland, on July 1st.

The theme of this symposium was Supramolecular Chemistry, and Dr. Sarah Thomas, a manager at RSC and Dr. Takashi Uemura, of Kyoto University, worked　together to bring the event to fruition. We invited six young chemists to participate. From Japan, Dr.Uemura of Kyoto, Dr. Yoshinori Takashima (Osaka Univ.) and Dr. Rie Makiura (Osaka Prefecture Univ.) gave presentations. Three speakers from the UK and Ireland were also invited, Dr. Thomas D. Bennett (University of Cambridge), Dr. Kim E. Jelfs (Imperial College London), and Dr. Wolfgang Schmitt (University of Dublin).

Leading-edge studies of supramolecular materials through molecular recognition, self-healing materials, amorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOF), coordination polymer surface nanotechtonics, molecular prediction of porous molecules, and MOF polymer syntheses and nanoscience, were unveiled at the symposium.

Before the symposium, a book of abstracts containing welcome addresses both by Prof. Yellowlees, President of RSC and Dr. Sadayuki Sakakibara, President of CSJ were provided, and welcome speeches were delivered both by RSC CEO Robert Parker and CSJ Executive Director Nobuyuki Kawashima.
After lively discussions, Prof. Yellowlees closed the symposium by delivering a strong message encouraging deeper cooperation and interaction in Chemistry between the UK, Ireland, and Japan.
