[化学論文のための英語講座] 第4回：ミニコーナー

今回はミニコーナーとして「バンクーバー　大自然のすぐ近くにある都市」をお送りします。

カナダのバンクーバーは、北方の大自然のすぐ近くにあるとは信じられないほどの文化的多様性に富んだ街です。トロントやメルボルンと同じように、バンクーバーには世界からの移民が多く暮らしています。街を歩いていると、いろいろな言語を聞くことができ、ほとんど全ての人が、見た目や服装に関係なく暮らしているように感じます。 たとえば、先住民の民芸品店、東インド料理屋、 中華街、日本庭園を見ることが出来ます。

そして、西ヨーロッパ、北アフリカ、南アメリカの様式もあちこち見ることができます。まるで、世界のほぼすべての文化がここに存在しているようです。公用語である英語とフランス語に加えて、世界中の人々の言語を身近に耳にすることができます。まさに、バンクーバーは世界文化の活気に満ちた交差点と言っても過言ではない街なのです。

それと同時に、自然を身近に感じることもでき、アライグマやスカンクに頻繁に遭遇しますし、生垣で餌を取って食べている姿 も見ることができます。さらに、サギやワシはよく見られますし、周辺にある森では、コヨーテ、クマ、そして時にはクーガーさえ姿を現します。

目を遠くに向けると、北の雪をかぶった山々と、海と森を思わせる爽やかな空気を、今まで暮らした街より濃く感じることができます。 バンクーバー港を出入りする水上飛行機は、この国際的中心都市の北には北極まで続く大自然が広がっていることを思い出させます。

[Mini Corner] Vancouver: A City on the Edge of Wilderness

Vancouver, Canada, is a city of great cultural diversity sitting at the edge of the great northern wilderness. Like Toronto and Melbourne, Vancouver is home to many immigrants from around the world. As one walks through the city, a multitude of different languages can be heard and almost everyone seems to belong, regardless of their appearance or clothing.

For example, there are indigenous folk craft shops, East Indian restaurants, Chinatown, and Japanese gardens, and Western European, North African, and South American styles can be seen here and there. It is as if almost every culture in the world has a place here. In addition to the official languages English and French, one can hear languages of people from all over the world. Indeed, Vancouver is a vibrant crossroads of world culture.

At the same time, nature feels close, with frequent encounters with raccoons and skunks, seen foraging in the bushes. In addition, herons and eagles are common, and coyotes, bears, and occasionally even cougars appear in the surrounding forests. Seeing the snow-capped mountains to the north and breathing the refreshing air reminiscent of ocean and forest gives an impression not found in many cities. And the sturdy floatplanes entering and leaving the Port of Vancouver are a reminder of the wilderness that stretches from this cosmopolitan city north to the artic.
