[化学論文のための英語講座] 番外編：バンクーバーのクリスマス

今回は「バンクーバーのクリスマス」をお送りします。

バンクーバーの冬は、昼が短く夜が長く雨と雪が多くて寒いですが、12月になると町の雰囲気が心を温かくします。町中の住宅地でも商店街でも、明るいクリスマス飾りが見られ、クリスマスの雰囲気があちこちに現れます。店に入ると定番のクリスマスソングが流れています。バンクーバークリスマスマーケットでは、伝統的なヨーロッパの食べ物を食べ、温かいグリューワインを飲み、手作り小物を買うことができます。４カ所で Lumiere Festival （イルミネーションイベント）が行われ、クリスマスシーズンのために作られた光り輝くオブジェが集まります。昨年のテーマは、シャチやアオサギなどの動物でした。

イルミネーションイベントは、ほかにもVanDusen Gardens （バンデューセン・ガーデンズ）で行われます。６ヘクタールある人気植物園が、１００万個以上の照明で装飾されるのです。Stanley Park（スタンリーパーク）ではこの期間、子供に人気のあるBright Nights Christmas Trainが登場します。この汽車は、公園内にある２キロメートルの線路を走ります。
もう一つ、ヘンデルのメサイアも伝統的にあちこちで演奏されます。

カナダの冬はとても寒さが厳しいですが、数々のイベントは楽しく心温まるものです。

Vancouver Christmas

In Vancouver in winter, the days are short, the nights are long, and the rain and snow are cold, but come December the city atmosphere warms the heart. In the neighbourhoods as well as the business districts cheerful decorations can be seen and a Christmas atmosphere appears here and there. Entering shops nostalgic holiday music is played. At the Vancouver Christmas Market one can eat traditional European treats, drink hot Glühwein, and by hand-made gifts. During the holiday season a Lumiere Festival is held, assembling groups of brightly illuminated statues. Last year, the theme included statues of orcas, herons, and other animals.

Another illumination event takes place at VanDusen Gardens. At this six-hectare botanical garden, over one million lights are displayed. At Stanley Park, the popular with children Bright Nights Christmas Train appears. This train runs on a two-kilometer track through the park.
Additionally, Handel's Messiah is traditionally performed here and there.

Although Canadian winter is bitterly cold, a number of events cheerfully warm the heart.

We will discuss idioms that are easy to make a mistake at next time.
