[化学論文のための英語講座] 第18回：ミニコーナー

今回はミニコーナーとして「雪国の米沢」をお送りします。

私が日本で初めて住んだのは、東北地方にある米沢という町でした。春なのにまだ雪が残っていました。北日本の冬は雪が多いと聞いていましたが、それまでの人生のほとんどを温暖な気候の中で過ごしてきた私は、新しい経験を楽しみにしていました。

やがて春から夏へと移り変わるうちに、奇妙なことに気づきました。町の公衆電話が全て高くなっているのです。みんな高さ約１メートルの台に載っていたことになります。それから、晩秋になると、人々が庭の木々や茂みの周りに木製の格子を置き始めたことにも気づきました。なぜ電話ボックスが高くなったのか、そしてなぜ格子が作られたのか、最初の雪が降った時に理解し始めました。

米沢の冬の雪はとても深く、全てを覆ってしまうのです！そして湿った、重い雪です。保護がなければ庭の木は崩壊すること、住人は家が押しつぶされないように、屋根から雪かきをする必要があることを知りました。

このように、面倒な面もありとても冷たい雪ですが、米沢の雪景色はそれはそれは美しいものでした。

[Mini Corner] Yonezawa: Snow Country

When I first came to Japan I lived in the Tohoku region in a town called Yonezawa. Even though it was spring when I arrived, there was still snow. I had heard that winter in Northern Japan is snowy, but I had spent most of my life in a warm climate, and was looking forward to a new experience.

As spring changed to summer, I noticed something strange. All the phone booths in town were elevated. Each and every one of them sat on a platform about one meter high. Then, in late autumn, I also noticed that people started placing wooden lattices around the trees and bushes in the gardens. I began to understand why the phone booths were elevated and why the lattices were built when the first snow fell.

Yonezawa winter snow is so deep that it covers everything with wet, heavy snow! I learned that without protection, the trees in the garden would collapse, and residents need to shovel snow from the roof to prevent their house from being crushed.

As you can see, the cold snow has a troublesome side, but the snowy scenery in Yonezawa is truly beautiful.
