[化学論文のための英語講座] 第34回：ミニコーナー

今回はミニコーナーとして「感謝のお祭り」をお送りします。

秋になりましたね。
気温が涼しくなり、日が短くなり、快適な季節です。木の葉、草、空の色、空気の香りまでもが変化し、林檎や梨や柿が熟して甘くなります。秋は冬の準備のため果物や野菜を収穫して保存する忙しい季節です。私の子供の頃の思い出のひとつは、母と杏子を瓶詰にしたことです。さらに母は杏子パイをいくつも作りました。母のパイはいつも最高に美味しかったです。

でも秋は労働だけではなく、豊作を祝うお祭りの季節でもあります。北米では感謝祭と言う名の収穫感謝のお祭りがあります。米国の感謝祭は11月の第4木曜日ですが、秋が早いカナダの感謝祭は10月の第2月曜日に行います。家族、親戚や友人と集まり、宴会を開きご馳走をふるまい一年の良いことを感謝する祝日です。

感謝祭での食べ物は地方や人によっても異なりますが、メニューの中心は七面鳥だと思います。8キロ以上の鳥を焼くのはかなり大変ですが、上手にできたら本当に美味しいです。よくあるおかずはジャガイモ、サツマイモ、インゲン、人参、クランベリーなどです。

デザートは色々ありますが、最も伝統的で間違いが無いのはパンプキンパイです。私の毎年恒例行事のひとつは新鮮なカボチャを買って自家製パイを作る事です。重要な点は自家製生地、新鮮な生クリームと卵、黒砂糖とシナモン、ナツメグ、クローブです。愛をこめてパンプキンピューレを作ったり七面鳥を焼いたりするのは時間がかかりますが、それだけの価値があります。さらに、宴会の残り物がいつも多いのでそれから数日間何も調理しなくても美味しいものが食べられます。

北米での祝日やお祭りの中で、感謝祭は最も人気のある物のひとつです。理由は感謝祭が大事な人たちと集まり、一緒に食事をして、大切な物に感謝する純粋な祝日だからです。今年も感謝祭を楽しみます。

[Mini Corner] Thanksgiving Holiday

It is autumn.
With the air becoming cooler and the days getting shorter, it is a comfortable season. The colors of the leaves, the grass, the sky, and even the scent of the air are changing. Apples, pears, and persimmons are ripening and becoming sweet. With harvesting and preserving fruits and vegetables for winter, autumn is a busy season. One of my childhood memories is jarring apricots with my mother. My mother also baked apricot pies. Mother's pies were always the most delicious.

But autumn is not just labor, it is also a season for celebrating an abundant harvest. In North America there is a harvest festival called Thanksgiving. In the United States, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, but in Canada, where autumn comes early, it is held on the second Monday in October. It is a holiday to gather with close family, friends and relatives, feast, and appreciate the good things of the year.

Thanksgiving food varies from place to place and person to person, but I think the centrepiece of the menu is turkey. Roasting a bird over eight kilograms is difficult, but if done right it is really delicious. Common side dishes include potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, carrots and cranberries.

There are many desserts, but make no mistake, the most traditional is pumpkin pie. One of my annual activities is to buy fresh pumpkins and bake pumpkin pies. The important points are homemade crust, fresh cream and eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Making pumpkin puree or roasting a turkey with love takes time, but it is worth the effort. Plus, there are always leftovers from Thanksgiving dinner, so one can eat delicious food for several days without having to prepare anything.

Of all the holidays in North America, Thanksgiving is one of the most popular. The reason is that Thanksgiving is a pure holiday where people gather with loved ones, eat together, and give thanks for what they hold dear. I look forward to Thanksgiving again this year.
