[化学論文のための英語講座] 第38回：ミニコーナー

今回は「日本滞在紀行」をお送りします。

昨年10月に久々に日本に来ました。
７年ぶりだなと思いながら、成田国際空港に到着してすぐに成田エクスプレスに乗りました。３年前に日本化学会の春季年会に参加する予定でしたが、パンデミックのせいで行けなくなったのです。この間に日本では何が変わったのかを見つける事、何よりも久々に友人に会い馴染みの場所を訪ねる事を楽しみにしていました。

宿は高円寺(東京都杉並区)の近くにしました。私は昔その辺りに住んでいた事があるので、荷物を部屋に置いてから近所を散歩しました。蚕糸の森公園とニコニコロードという商店街はほとんど変わらず、中野駅までの道はすぐに思い出しました。７年ぶりなのに一週間くらいの海外旅行から帰ってきたみたいで、ずっと日本に居たような気持ちになりました。不思議だな、ただいまーと思いました。

東京の電車、地下鉄、駅、コンビニ、街並みはほとんど変わらず残っていました。変わったことと言えば、現金の代わりにキャッシュレス決済をする人がだいぶ増えたようです。さらに渋谷駅の一部がだいぶ変わり、原宿駅は完全に変わっていて驚きました。

パンデミックのせいで来日できなかった間は和食が恋しかったので、高円寺に着いた日の夕飯は回転寿司、次の日は馴染みの店で焼き鳥を食べました。でもずっと前から本当に食べたかったものは蕎麦です。幸いにも友達が良い店を紹介してくれて、一緒に美味しい蕎麦を食べました。天ぷら蕎麦は最高に美味しかったです。麺類は他にも博多ラーメンや横浜ラーメン、つけ麺などたくさん食べました。焼き肉も何回も食べに行き、私の大好物のお好み焼きも食べられて大満足でした。

新幹線に乗って、のぞみが前より速くなったと思いました。いや、それは気のせいですね、前も速かったです。京都駅で停車した時、京大に居た頃のことを懐かしく思い出しました。今回は京都に泊まる時間がありませんでしたが、次回は絶対行こうと決心しました。神戸ではずっと前に知り合ったイギリス人の友達と久しぶりに会えました。神戸の次は福岡。天気が素晴らしくて、友達と志賀島巡りを満喫しました。

5週間の滞在中は、友達と遊んだり、馴染みの店へ行ったり、好みのブルースバーへ行ってセッションに参加したり聴いたりと、昔のような懐かしい東京の生活ができました。改装した日本化学会の化学会館にも行きました。次回は今回いけなかった場所にもぜひ行きたいです。

次の日本旅行を楽しみにしています！

Japan Travelogue

In October of last year, I traveled to Japan for the first time in a while.
I boarded the Narita Express as soon as I arrived at Narita International Airport, recalling that it was the first time in seven years. Three years ago, I had planned to attend the CSJ Annual Spring Meeting, but was unable due to the pandemic. I was looking forward to seeing what had changed in Japan during this time, and above all, seeing friends and visiting familiar places.

I was staying near Koenji (Tokyo Suginami ward). I used to live in the area, so I put my luggage in my room and went for a walk around the neighbourhood. Sanshin no Mori Park and Nico Nico Road shopping street had scarcely changed, and I immediately remembered the way to Nakano Station. It had been seven years since I had been in Japan, but it felt like I had just returned from a week-long overseas trip, like I had been in Japan the entire time. Strange, I thought. I feel like I have come home.

Tokyo trains, subways, stations, convenience stores, and layout remained nearly unchanged. Speaking of things that had changed, it seemed that more people were making cashless payments rather than using cash. In addition, part of Shibuya Station had changed a lot, and Harajuku Station was completely changed, surprising me.

During the time I was unable to come to Japan due to the pandemic, I missed Japanese food, so the day I arrived in Koenji, I had sushi for dinner, and the next day I ate yakitori at a familiar shop. But what I really wanted to eat was soba. Fortunately, my friend introduced me to a good restaurant, and we ate delicious soba together. The tempura soba was the best! I ate many other noodles such as Hakata ramen, Yokohama ramen, and tsukemen. I went to eat yakiniku several times, and was delighted that I could eat my favorite okonomiyaki.

Riding the Shinkansen, it seemed that the Nozomi was faster than before. No, it was just my imagination, it was fast before as well. When the train stopped at Kyoto Station, I fondly remembered my time at Kyoto University. I did not have time to stay in Kyoto this time, but I decided to definitely visit next time. In Kobe, I met an old English friend whom I had not seen in years. After Kobe, I went to Fukuoka. The weather was splendid and I enjoyed exploring Shikanoshima with a friend.

During my five-week stay, I was able to spend time with friends, go to familiar shops, attend and listen to sessions at my favorite blues bar, and enjoy a nostalgic Tokyo lifestyle just like old times. I also went to the refurbished Chemistry Hall of the Chemical Society of Japan. Next time, I definitely want to go to the places I missed this time.

I am looking forward to my next Japan trip!
