[化学論文のための英語講座] 第42回：Compriseの使い方

Compriseは、論文でよく間違えられている単語の一つです。Comprise は他動詞であり、主な意味は「含む」「構成する」の2つです。よく間違われるのは前置詞の有無です。

[ポイント]
動詞として用いる場合、「comprise」は他動詞なので前置詞は不要で、「be comprised」は自動詞なので前置詞が必要となります。意味としては、「comprise」と「be comprised of」は交換可能です。
名詞を修飾する場合は動詞と同じ用法で「comprising」は前置詞不要、「comprised」は前置詞が必要となり、意味としては「comprising」と「comprised of」で交換可能です。

詳しくは、以下の例文を見てみましょう。まずは動詞として用いる場合です。

1. Charge-transfer complexes comprise an electron donor and an electron acceptor.
訳文：電荷移動錯体は、電子供与体と電子受容体を含む。

2. Charge-transfer complexes are comprised of an electron donor and an electron acceptor.
訳文：電荷移動錯体は、電子供与体と電子受容体で構成されている。

次に名詞を修飾する場合です。

3. The charge-transfer complex comprising ruthenium and bipyridine-derived ligand
訳文：ルテニウムとビピリジン系配位子を含む電荷移動錯体

4. The charge -transfer complex comprised of ruthenium and bipyridine-derived ligand
訳文：ルテニウムとビピリジン系配位子からなる電荷移動錯体

例文3を使って文章にすると、以下のようになります。

5. The charge-transfer complex comprising ruthenium and bipyridine-derived ligand is well known.
訳文：ルテニウムとビピリジン系配位子を含む電荷移動錯体はよく知られている。

Use of Comprise

Comprise is commonly misused in manuscripts. Comprise is a transitive verb and has primarily two meanings: include and constitute. A common mistake is the absence or presence of a preposition.

Point:
When used as a verb, comprise is transitive, and no preposition is required. However, be comprised is intransitive and a preposition is required. Semantically, comprised and be comprised of are interchangeable. When modifying a noun, comprising does not require a preposition, while comprised does, just as when using a verb. Comprising and comprised of are also interchangeable.

In detail, let us look at the examples below. First is the case of using as a verb.

1. Charge-transfer complexes comprise an electron donor and an electron acceptor.

2. Charge-transfer complexes are comprised of an electron donor and an electron acceptor.

Next is the case of modifying a noun.

3. The charge-transfer complex comprising ruthenium and bipyridine-derived ligand...

4. The charge-transfer complex comprised of ruthenium and bipyridine-derived ligand...

Using example 3 to form a complete sentence provides the example below.

5. The charge-transfer complex comprising ruthenium and bipyridine-derived ligand is well known.
