[化学論文のための英語講座] 第44回：動詞由来の名詞（接尾辞 -ion）

動詞に -ion をつけると名詞の役割を持ち、動作、状態、結果などを表します。-ion をつけることができる単語はラテン語に由来する動詞です。元の動詞の綴りにより、-tion, -sion をつける場合もあります（例外はあります）。以下の例を見てみましょう。

discuss	discussion
introduce	introduction
conclude	conclusion

-ion をつけることができる動詞は動名詞としても利用できます。例文を見てみましょう。

1. Elucidating the absolute stereochemistry proved challenging.
訳文：絶対立体化学を解明するのが難しいとわかった。

2. Elucidation of the absolute stereochemistry proved to be challenging.
訳文：絶対立体化学の解明が難しいとわかった。

3. Converting to the enol ether was accomplished in the same manner as the previous example.
訳文：エノールエーテルに変換するのは前の例と同じ方法で行われた。

4. Conversion to the enol ether was accomplished in the same manner as the previous example.
訳文：エノールエーテルへの変換は前の例と同じ方法で行われた。

5. Resolving this problem will require great effort.
訳文：この課題を解決するには多大な努力が必要になる。

6. Resolution of this problem will require great effort.
訳文：この課題の解決には多大な努力が必要になる。

Verbs Derived from Nouns (the -ion suffix)

Adding the suffix -ion to a verb gives a noun, which expresses an action, state, or result. Words to which -ion can be added are verbs of Latin origin. Depending on the spelling of the original verb, -tion or -sion may be added (there are exceptions). Let us look at the examples below.

emit	emission
absorb	absorption
resolve	resolution
converse	conversation
discuss	discussion
introduce	introduction
conclude	conclusion

Verbs ending in -ion can also be used like gerunds. Let us take a look at the examples below.

1. Elucidating the absolute stereochemistry proved challenging.

2. Elucidation of the absolute stereochemistry proved to be challenging.

3. Converting to the enol ether was accomplished in the same manner as the previous example

4. Conversion to the enol ether was accomplished in the same manner as the previous example.

5. Resolving this problem will require great effort.

6. Resolution of this problem will require great effort.
