「Method」と「methodology」はどう違うでしょうか。化学論文では両方とも同意味で利用されますが、実は意味が少し異なります。厳密に言えば「method」は方法または戦術、「methodology」は方法論または戦略という意味があります。特許を作成する場合はそのような微妙な差は重要と思われますが、研究論文ではどちらを使っても結論はあまり変わりません。
論文で使用する場合、重点の１つは冠詞の有無です。「Method」は冠詞が必要ですが「methods」または「methodology」は冠詞が要りません。それを考慮して「methodology」を使うと、文章の流れが少しなめらかになります。以下の例文を見てみましょう。

1. The zeolite was prepared using a sol-gel method.
2. The zeolite was prepared using sol-gel methods.
3. The zeolite was prepared using sol-gel methodology.
和訳：ゾルゲル法を使用してゼオライトは調製されました。

上記の例文をみると、論文の焦点が zeolite の合成の場合「method」と「methodology」の差は重大ですが、そうではない場合は著者らの好みで使えます。そして「method」や「methodology」は文章に意味を加えない時には除いた方が賢明です。例文を見てみましょう。

4. The resulting ester was purified using a chromatographic method.
和訳：クロマトグラフィー法を使用して得られたエステルを精製しました。

5. The ester was purified chromatographically.
和訳：クロマトグラフィーでエステルを精製しました。

上記の例文は同意味ですが後者は簡潔で、研究論文にふさわしいです。

How do method and methodology differ? In chemistry papers both are used with the same meaning, but actually they are slightly different. Strictly speaking, method is a tactic whereas methodology is a strategy. When preparing a patent, this subtle difference may be important, but in a research paper either can be used without much change in the conclusion. However, when using in a paper, one important point is the presence or absence of an article. Method requires an article, however methods or methodology do not. Considering this, using methodology can provide a smoother flow. Let us look at the following examples.

1. The zeolite was prepared using a sol-gel method.
2. The zeolite was prepared using sol-gel methods.
3. The zeolite was prepared using sol-gel methodology.

Looking at the above examples, the difference between method and methodology is significant if the focus is on the zeolite synthesis, but if that is not the case, authors can use whichever they like. Furthermore, when method or methodology do not add meaning to a sentence, it is prudent to omit them. Let us look at an example.

4. The resulting ester was purified using a chromatographic method.
5. The ester was purified chromatographically.

The above examples express the same meaning, but the latter is more concise and more suitable for a research paper.
