以下の例文を見てみましょう。

1. The 2024 CSJ Annual Spring Meeting promises to be an important gathering.
和訳：2024年春季年会は、重要な集まりになることが約束されています。

英語の「promise」を動詞として使うと日本語の「約束する」と同じ意味を持っています。すなわち、「promise」は「約束する」、「(be)+promising」は「約束している」と一致です。「Promise」は「約束」と同じく名詞としても使います。
しかし「約束」と若干違う意味もあります。

2. Supercapacitors show great promise in energy storage.
和訳：スーパーキャパシタは、エネルギー貯蔵に大きな期待を寄せている。

ここでは「promise」は名詞として使われ「期待」という意味です。同じように、「(be)+promising」も「約束している」とは違う意味があります。例文を見てみましょう。

3. The vendor is promising to deliver the reagents by Friday.
和訳：業者は金曜日までに試薬を届けると約束している。

この「is promising」は現在進行形動詞なので「約束している」という意味があります。

4. Proceeding via the enol ether is promising.
和訳：エノールエーテルを経由する方法は有望です。

この「is promising」は形容詞として使われている現在分詞なので「有望な」という意味があります。

5. Proceeding via the enol ether is a promising strategy.
和訳：エノールエーテルを経由する方法は有望な戦略です。

ここの「is (a) promising」は4と同じく形容詞の役割を果たす現在分詞です。

「Promising」は、現在進行形「約束している」と言う意味でも、形容詞で「有望な」としても使われています。

Promising

Let us look at the following example.

1. The 2022 CSJ Annual Spring Meeting promises to be an important gathering.

When used as a verb, promise has the meaning of pledge, swear, or assure. The participle promising has the corresponding meanings of pledging, swearing, or assuring. Promise is also used as a noun meaning pledge, oath, or assurance.
However, promise also has another slightly different meaning.

2. Supercapacitors show great promise in energy storage.

Here, promise is used as a noun meaning expectation. In the same way, (be) promising can also have a slightly different meaning. Let us look at some examples.

3. The vendor is promising to deliver the reagents by Friday.

In this example is promising appears in the present progressive and means is assuring.

4. Proceeding via the enol ether is promising.

Here is promising is a present participle functioning as an adjective meaning hopeful or favourable.

5. Proceeding via the enol ether is a promising strategy.

Here is (a) promising, like example 4, is a present participle functioning as an adjective.

Promising can be used in progressive form meaning pledging or assuring, and can also function as an adjective meaning hopeful or favourable.
