時々原稿に、めずらしい表現があります。文法的には正しいけれど不思議な感じがするのです。おかしくはないのですが、なんとなく奇妙な表現―不思議の国のアリスで使用されているのでは、と思えるような表現です。
このような表現の１つに「almost similar」があります。「almost similar」はとくに目立ちませんが、よく考えると若干一致しない意味を持っています。この不思議さの原因はなんでしょうか。
読者の皆さんはご存知だと思いますが「similar」には「同様」という意味があります。まったく同じではないがだいたい同じ、「類似」という意味です。一方「almost」には「ほとんど」または「ほぼ」という意味があります。でも「almost」は「まだ完全ではない」という未達の意味を含んでいます。そのため「almost similar」と言うと「まだ相似ではない」との感じを与えます。類似ではあるが、なんとなく似ていないという感じです。
かわりに「almost the same」と言うと「ほぼ同じ」ということがはっきりします。また「largely similar」と言うと「だいたい似ている」という意味があります。

Every now and then unusual expressions appear in manuscripts. They are grammatically correct yet feel strange: not weird, but puzzling; something that could be expected to appear in Alice in Wonderland. One such expression is almost similar. This expression is not particularly eye-catching, but given some thought, the meaning is somewhat inconsistent. What causes this strangeness?
As I am sure our readers know, similar means like. Similar is not the same; it resembles. On the other hand, almost means nearly or approximately. But almost also includes the meaning not yet complete. Thus, almost similar gives a feeling of not yet similar, similar yet somehow feeling dissimilar. Alternatively, almost the same clearly means nearly identical and largely similar means mostly the same.
