2025年12月 Pacifichem 2025 のためにハワイに行ってきました。読者で Pacifichem 2025 に参加した方もいるでしょう。ハワイにいくのは20年ぶりでした。当時も Pacifichem のために行ってきました。実は私はハワイ大学卒業です。何年前かは言いたくないのですが、かなり昔のことです。三年間、オアフ島で生活しました。
天気はずっと曇っていて、雨も少し降りました。ハワイ諸島の北側では曇りと雨がかなり多いですが、風下にあるホノルルで五日間悪天候が続くのはめずらしいです。でも、ハワイは雨が降っても快適だと思います。ハワイで暮らした三年間、私は一回も「天気が辛いな」と思いませんでした。台風があっても、比較的過ごしやすいと思います。
20年ぶりのハワイは一見すると、時が止まったかのように、何も変わっていないようでした。海、山、森も。空港からホテルまで向かう車窓から、木造の家やコンクリートのビル、学校、公園といった景色は昔の記憶と変わりませんでした。ワイキキも昔と変わらないように見えました。ファッションも相変わらず、ショートパンツにTシャツが多かったです。観光客が増えたかな？これは判断がつきませんでした。
予定外に同窓会に誘われました。土曜日夕方、時間通りにハワイ大学化学ビル４階バルコニーに向かいました。私と同じ代の卒業生は一人もおらず、知っている人は昔の先生だけ。他は皆、若手の研究者でした。Pacifichem のために日本から来た方も数人いました。昔と違うのは、ビールの種類が増えたこと。国際化はハワイにも届いています。
全体として素晴らしい旅でした。学会で面白い講演を聞き、ポスターセッションで有望な若手研究者や大学院生と活発な議論を交わしました。日本化学会のレセプションと昔の研究室の同窓会で興味深い話も聞けました。20年ぶりのハワイ訪問は懐かしさにあふれた旅となりました。

Hawai'i after twenty years -then and now-
I went to Hawai'i for Pacifichem 2025 last December. Some of our readers may have participated in Pacifichem 2025. It had been 20 years since my last visit to Hawai'i. That time as well was for Pacifichem. Actually, I graduated from the University of Hawai'i. I don't want to say how many years ago, but it was quite a long time. I made O'ahu home for three years.
The weather was overcast the entire time, with a little rain. The north shores of the Hawai'ian Islands are frequently cloudy and rainy, but it is unusual to have five straight days of overcast weather in leeward Honolulu. But for me, Hawai'i is comfortable even in the rain. In the three years I lived in Hawai'i, I never once thought the weather was terrible. Even during a hurricane, it is still relatively comfortable.
Seeing Hawai'i for the first time in twenty years, at first glance it was as if time had stopped and nothing seemed to have changed. The oceans. The mountains. The forests. From the car window on the way from the airport to the hotel, the scenes of wooden houses, concrete buildings, schools, and parks were the same as I remembered. Waikiki as well seemed unchanged. Fashion was the same, people dressed in shorts and T-shirts, as always. Had there been an increase in tourists? I could not tell.
Unexpectedly, I was invited to a reunion. On Saturday evening, I arrived punctually at the fourth-floor lanai of the chemistry building at UH. There was not a single person from my era, and the only person I knew was my old professor. Almost everyone else was an early-career researcher. A few people had come from Japan for Pacifichem. One change from the past is that there were many more types of beer. Globalization has reached Hawaii as well.
Overall, it was a wonderful trip. I listened to some fascinating talks at the conference and engaged in lively discussions with promising young researchers and graduate students at the poster session. I also heard some riveting stories at the Chemical Society of Japan reception and at the reunion of my old research group. My first visit to Hawai'i in twenty years was a trip filled with nostalgia.
